What is the price of your life?
Imagine being told it was worth Rs 1,050 in silver.
Hmm, that was in the 1970’s, by today’s rate if you kept the silver thalers it would be a more respectable 11 and a half lakhs. Still, would you agree that if you were killed, all debts could be settled by paying Rs 12 lakhs?
Okay, what if you were one of 300 that had been killed, and someone needed to pay your wife, kid or parent. So who would carry the cash around?
Paying The Blood Price
Eric Gonsalves. Celia’s Uncle, who is now considered The Legend in IFS circles. The OG. He was then a rising star. Entrusted with demarcating the border of Manipur & India. This happened in two stints, spanning 10 years.
One of his responsibilities was a final tribal settlement. A what?
The hills of north East India were, tempestuous. Hilly, dense, populated by a martial people. The Ahoms a noble dynasty fought fierce battles against the Mughals & British. But the Martial Spirit never left. And was embedded in its tribes.
Tribal conflict was a fact of life. But there was one safety valve. At the end of the year, the death count of various tribes would be totaled up. If both sides were equally victimized it was all square. But if there was a difference, the tribe that had been more aggressive made up for it, by paying reparations in silver, rupees or best, German thalers. Once the payment was made, all debts, were wiped out. No retribution could be carried forward.
So, at the time of the formal demarcation of India’s and Burma’s boundary, some tribes would be on this side, some on that. But the final retribution count had to be done and paid. The tribals, the India side had killed 33 more tribals who would now be on the Burma side. The rate of 300 Silver German Thalers, per death, was fixed. Why German Silver Thalers? Well because that was the most trusted currency, in the hills at that time.
So, yeah, Eric had to carry 10,000 silver coins, and pay it to the tribal council, up in the hills.
Scary Hill Trek… With Blood Thirsty Thieves
Picture this. Imagine you’re Eric Gonsalves, IFS officer, in a strange country, with armed tribals around, carrying about 300 crores in cash, or more than half a ton of silver, {While half a ton of silver is about 15 crores in today’s money, since they were 10,000 Silver thalers, make that 300 crores.}
Anyway 15 cores, or 300, that’s obscene money to be carrying around in a strange place. No, you weren’t alone. There was an intelligence officer, and assistants. But everyone was unarmed. They were an Indian team in a foreign country and had to give up their weapons.
Anyway one of the team members, assured Eric Gonsalves that, it wasn’t easy to snatch & run away with half a ton of silver.
The journey up the hills, through dense forest was threatening, unsettling, but thankfully uneventful. Apart from hard climbing, the odd snake, threatening wildlife. But no bandits swooped down. No terrorists attacked. As they later surmised. They were heavily protected. The entire hillsides were filled with hidden eyes and guns of the various tribes.
Now, this is an incredible story from when a country was being born and has a wealth of learning.
Don’t Look At Eric’s Aura
We could ask you to take a look at Uncle Eric’s aura. Then & now. But he is not a subject of a psychic experiment, so let’s give you a quick insight. A comparison revealed that at his most vibrant, he had a strong solar plexus {Organisation}, bindu {Reflective Understanding}, & Ab Chakra {Self Esteem}. At 89 years of age, he lead a 5 nation conference including China. Then his 3rd eye blazed, his navel chakra was strong, his ab & root understandably weaker than his 40’s! Today in his mid 90’s, his bindu & crown are brighter than ever, but his navel & solar plexus are now pressured.
We could reflect on the fact that many think bureaucrats are bureaucrats, not nation builders, world shapers. But Eric & his team were anything but pen pushers.
Is Dutch Roman Law Better Than Tribal Law?
We are accustomed to living in a democracy, under what has broadly been called Dutch-Roman law. And so the idea of justice being you kill one of my family, I kill one of yours may seem odd, even abhorrent. But we are seeing similar thinking between Israelis & Palestinians. A Hamas attack killed 1200 Israelis. And Israeli retribution has conservatively killed 67,000 Palestinians {Or is it 500,000?}.
But unlike many conflicts and riots, in our current world, the North Eastern Hills, had a strong, robust tribal Justice system. We may not like it, but it is there. So if one tribe kills more of another, they as aggressor have to pay reparations. The aggressors are not glorified as superior. But acknowledge that they allowed themselves to break boundaries. Both aggressor & victim by this act acknowledge they are bound by humanity.
And this leads us to the question of Individuality, of individual guilt versus mass guilt. So if you kill one in their family, they can kill one of yours. Anyone.
What is an Individual? Is Tribal Man Same As Urban Man?
In the Indian Context, laws of dowry, are linked such, so if a man is accused of demanding dowry, his parents can be arrested and jailed.
Who is an individual, what is an individual. Individuality in a tribal environment is utterly different from Individuality in a Modern Society.
How significant is this? you ask. Does it just impact behavior, or does it change the person himself? Herself?
And it is this we choose to focus on in this article.
Let us compare the aura of 6 individuals.
A tribal from The Hills.
A man from a strong extended, joint family culture.
An Indian nuclear family man from an urban area.
A western man from a strongly individualistic space.
A western man from a street gang.
An army man from an infantry troop.The Key difference lies in the abdomen & below feet chakras.
Those with strong tribal identities or family connections have a thread from the abdomen to the left of the body. When if the connection is to a Tribe, there is a connection further off. It is more deeply embedded.
Now let us look at people who belong to two urban tribes. A street gang and military. The one connected to a street gang has a connect to the right of the body. As it happens with the military. If the group is involved in war or prolonged belonging to a group the connection shifts to the left also.
An individual nuclear family man, versus a joint family man both have a strong set of links from the abdomen to the left side of the body. But someone who was born in a joint family and lives there has chakra attachments to the knees and navel, governing behavioural patterns.
A western family man with a strong family tradition, tends to have a similar connect to the left of the body. But one in a nuclear family without this strong family connect has lines from the abdomen & navel chakras to a structure to the right, indicating principles, or outer behavior.
A Wealth of Learnings: Redefining Identity & Group Existence.
Now as we look at our aura research we realise we have gathered an incredible range of Learnings.
First Questions of Identity come up... Which Chakra is Involved? Is man in Modern World Same as Man in Tribal World, Same as Man in a Troop?
A} Ab Chakra and WHO AM I?
Clearly as the ancients have seen, IDENTITY IS CLEARLY LINKED WITH THE ABDOMEN CHAKRA.
Another significant chakra is, THE BELOW-FEET ANCESTRAL CHAKRA. But this true only for INTRINSIC GROUPS.
Then we see that there are two psychic locii that are vital. FAMILY & ANCESTRAL POOLS.
B} Individual Man, Family Man, Group Man & Tribal Man are Different...
The Question of WHO AM I? Is far deeper than either psychologists or lay spiritualists imagine. It is a many layered question.
So who am I?
I am i.
What many are gravitating to in the modern world. An individual. Alone.Then there is…
I am i & us.
This is what most identify with. Be it in the ancient or modern world. The difference being as we will see later are we talking about intrinsic or extrinsic groups?But the Tribal Mind goes one step deeper. It says:-
The representative of WE here is i.
Spend a while reflecting over this difference between -- An 'i' versus 'Finger of a We'.
C} Family Versus Gangs. Gangs Versus Tribes...
We now turn to issues of groups & gangs and Identity... Now one of the thing our aura research throws up is that not all groupings are the same. And this is huge.
And a key discovery is that we have key determinants that reveal the nature of the group.
First is the key group loci to the left or right of the body. The right energy pools we call extrinsic. They are not embedded into the psyche. So there are INTRINSIC TRIBES and EXTRINSIC GANGS.
Next as we look we realise that there is a difference between Family & Tribes. And Tribes and Tribes that are part of the land, for whom the land will bestir itself. BLOOD TRIBES and EARTH TRIBES.Since most of us here, reading this are islands, or from a nuclear family, all this is still new. But how deep do blood ties really go?
In a gut-churning but revealing experiment, conducted in Russia, a mother rabbit and babies were separated. One was put in a nuclear sub deep underwater, the others were kept on earth, 100's of miles away. The baby rabbits were. Killed, at the exact moment the mother rabbit's brain showed a marked fluctuation, remember she was seperated by a sub's metal, deep water and hundreds of miles.
Questions for Advanced Students
But we ask serious students to explore the question deeper, perhaps among ants.
The female worker ant. Male Drones. The Queen Ant.Then sub explore
Caretaker Worker Ants: The younger workers who remain inside the nest to care for the queen and the brood (eggs, larvae, and pupae). They feed and groom the young to ensure their healthy development.
Maintenance Worker Ants: Worker ants who construct and expand the nest by digging tunnels and chambers and are also responsible for sanitation, which includes disposing of dead ants and waste.
Forager Worker Ants: Older ants who often take on the more dangerous task of foraging for food outside the nest {More dispensable}. They collect food and water and bring it back to share with the rest of the colony.
Defender Worker Ants: Ants who protect the nest from threats and other rival ant colonies.
Soldier Worker Ants: In some species, a sub-caste of larger-bodied "soldiers" with strong mandibles exists to defend the colony.People in the past have talked of God's like Lord Vishnu being the underlying premise of life on earth, in numerous articles we have discussed the strength of the spiritual webwork between all beings and things. We once again glimpse the dense richness of that kind of existence.
Answering Big Riddles...Raising Huge Questions
We have gone on a long journey.
Looked at Life, Death, Justice.We have gone deeply into identity issues. Looked at how society & man shape each other and are embedded in each other. We have looked at various tribes and gangs seen similarities & differences.
But there are a thousand and one questions further. If we are part of a tribe, how do we carry this in our incarnations? If we are part of a tribe, does the tribe have an incarnation?
Questions, questions… And yet one reassurance. We are mysteries. A little that we see here. Much that shall be revealed.

To remind us modern humans that our way of life may in fact be, surviving not living. Nor by recalling and celebrating variant ways of life, are we saying that Tribal Communities should be locked into tribalism. But that it is a valid way of life. With great virtue. Nor are we stating that Democratic freedoms are not for everyone. But to allow ourselves to rexamine politics, the idea of democracy. To highlight the different thinking about Justice. To ask ourselves to relook at Dutch-Roman Law.
A ReExamination: More importantly, the article asks us to look at our transformation from tribal & joint family to Nuclear families, and then to isolated urban individuals with no groupings... Is it a positive or an amputation? It asks us to look at identity, relook at identity. To relook at Man-society links.
It asks us to consider what is an individual, a soul... And so to relook at very basic concepts of Spirituality...
